Aesthetic and Laser Nursing in Dubai: the Two DHA Titles a Nurse Can Add
9 min read · Last reviewed · How we research these guides
Aesthetics pays better than the ward, the clinics are hiring, and every answer you can find online was written by somebody selling you a course or a job. The real answer is two rows in two published documents, and it is more favourable to you than you have been told in one place and much less favourable in the other.
Dubai treats aesthetics as an allied health field, not a nursing specialty. So this is not a specialty nurse title like critical care or oncology. It is a second, separate title, sitting outside nursing, that you add to your registration — and the rules for adding it are written in a chapter most nurses never open.
Confirm before you act
The two titles, and which one is actually yours
There are two titles in play, they are different titles in different sections of the PQR, and people talk about them as if they were one thing. They are not, and a nurse’s position in each is the opposite of the other.
| Title | What the PQR asks for | Where a nurse stands |
|---|---|---|
| Aesthetician (section 18.1) | A diploma in Beauty Therapy or Cosmetics from a nationally accredited institute, minimum one-year course, plus one year of post-qualification experience in a related field. | Your nursing qualification counts for nothing in this row. You need the beauty therapy diploma like anybody else. |
| Laser Hair Reduction Technician (section 18.20) | Registered Nurse, Assistant Nurse or Beauty Therapist as the base, plus an accredited laser hair reduction training course with evidence of ten hands-on training cases. | Your nursing qualification IS the base qualification. Being already licensed removes the experience requirement entirely. |
If you take one thing from this page: the laser title is the route your licence shortens. The aesthetician title is the route your licence does not touch.
The clause that puts nurses on a list of three
Dubai’s Manual for Licensing Healthcare Professionals — document code DHA/HRS/HLD/MA-2, version 1.3, issued and effective 18 July 2025 — added a clause that nobody has published yet. Clause 10.14 restricts who may even apply for the aesthetics title:
“Only the following licensed healthcare professionals (HPs) are eligible to apply for the Beauty Therapy/Aesthetician title after meeting the relevant licensing requirements: Registered Nurse; Assistant Nurse; Laser Hair Reduction Therapist.”
Two of the three named categories are nursing titles. Every other licensed professional in Dubai — physiotherapist, pharmacist, radiographer, dietitian — is outside that list, and clause 10.14.1 tells them the price of getting in: “If any other category of licensed HP wishes to obtain the Beauty Therapy/Aesthetician title, they must first cancel their existing specialty license. Holding and activating both licenses simultaneously is not permitted.”
Read the two clauses together and the shape is clear. A physiotherapist who moves into aesthetics gives up being a physiotherapist. A Registered Nurse does not. You are in the small group that can hold both.
The trap: eligible to apply is not qualified
One more thing worth knowing about 10.14: it lives in chapter six, the Get Registered chapter, rather than the add-a-title chapter. The manual does not explain why. Do not assume it applies only to new applicants or only to existing licensees — put your own case to the DHA through the Self Assessment rather than to a recruiter.
Aesthetician: the row with no nursing route
Section 18.1 of the Unified PQRis a single row, and it is short enough to quote whole. The Aesthetician title asks for a “Diploma in Beauty Therapy or Cosmetics from a nationally accredited institute (minimum one (1) year course duration)” and “One (1) year experience post qualification in a related field”.
There is no second row. No degree route, no licensed-professional route, no shortcut for someone who has spent a decade in theatre. If you want this title you enrol on a beauty therapy or cosmetics course of at least a year at an institute accredited in its own country, and then you work a year in a related field before the title is available to you.
Note also what the experience column is doing. It is a clock that starts when the qualification exists, not before — the same structure that catches experienced nurses out in the specialty nurse row. Years worked in a clinic before you hold the diploma do not count towards the year after it.
Laser Hair Reduction Technician: three routes, and yours is the short one
Section 18.20 is where your licence earns something. The title is Laser Hair Reduction Technician, and the PQR publishes three ways in.
| Route | Qualification the PQR asks for | Experience |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Already licensed | Licensed Healthcare Professional by either of the Authorities as a Registered Nurse, Assistant Nurse or Beauty Therapist, AND successful completion of an accredited laser training course for hair reduction with evidence of ten hands-on training cases. | No experience required* (*in compliance with the Discontinuity of Practice criteria) |
| 2. Qualified, not yet licensed | Academic qualification as a Registered Nurse, Assistant Nurse or Beauty Therapist, AND successful completion of an accredited laser training course for hair reduction with evidence of ten hands-on training cases. | One (1) year experience post qualification in a related field |
| 3. Certified outside the UAE | Academic qualification as a Registered Nurse, Assistant Nurse or Beauty Therapist, AND hair reduction certification from the Society for Clinical and Medical Hair Removal (SCHMR) or the National Council on Laser Certification (NCLC) if attained outside UAE, AND evidence of ten hands-on training cases. | One (1) year experience post qualification in a related field |
The difference between route 1 and route 2 is one word: licensed against academic qualification. Holding a live UAE nursing licence is what moves you into the top row and deletes the one-year experience requirement. If you are reading this already working in Dubai on an active DHA licence, that is your row.
Do this in the right order
Two details in the table repay attention. The ten hands-on training casesappear in all three routes, so a certificate of attendance with no logged cases fails every one of them — ask any provider for the case-evidence format before you pay. And the two named certifying bodies, SCHMR and NCLC, are only triggered “if attained from outside UAE”, which is most readers of this page.
The asterisk on “No experience required” is the same one that sits under every nursing row in the PQR: the Discontinuity of Practice criteria still apply, so a long break from clinical work is assessed the same way it is for your nursing title. See gap of practice.
Two documents, three names for the same thing
The PQR calls section 18.1 “Aesthetic/Beauty Therapy” and the title inside it “Aesthetician”. Section 18.20 refers to a “Beauty Therapist”. The DHA manual calls the same thing the “Beauty Therapy/Aesthetician title”, and lists a “Laser Hair Reduction Therapist” where the PQR title is “Laser Hair Reduction Technician”. They are the same titles under inconsistent labels. When you search Sheryan or read a job advert, match the PQR wording, because that is what the registration is issued against.
A separate licence, and a doctor above you
A DHA nursing licence does not let you perform hair laser. Clause 13.12 of the manual is one sentence: “All healthcare professionals performing hair laser procedures will require having a separate DHA license for hair laser procedures.”
That is the licensing reason the title exists at all. Your RN licence and your laser licence are two things, activated separately, and doing the work on the first alone is practising outside your licence.
Clause 13.13 then names who may supervise hair laser and IPL, after obtaining a separate DHA licence for the Laser Hair Reduction privilege:
- Consultant or Specialist in Family Medicine
- Consultant or Specialist in Internal Medicine
- General Practitioner with not less than five years’ experience in non-surgical cosmetic procedures
No nursing title is on that list, and clause 13.14 holds those doctors to an accredited laser training course not older than two years, proof of ten hands-on cases during the same course, and passing a DHA assessment. The practical consequence for you is a hiring question, not a clinical one: a clinic that cannot name the supervising doctor who holds that privilege is a clinic whose licensing you should check before you sign.
How the title actually gets added
The mechanics are the same two-step you would use for any added title, and the split matters because the second step is not yours.
- You apply through the Sheryan Add/Upgrade Professional Registration service to put the new title on your registration.
- Your employing facilitythen applies the updated registration to your licence. Clause 14.2 sets the condition that stops people: the licence can be updated by the licensing facility “providing the specialty is available within the facility’s license”.
Read 14.2 before you pay for anything. If your hospital’s facility licence does not include the aesthetics or laser specialty, it cannot activate the title for you however well qualified you are. A clinic that is licensed for it can — which usually means a second, part-time licence at a second facility, and the part-time rules then apply in full, including your full-time medical director’s approval switch.
Budget for an assessment too. Clause 13.8: “The applicant may require passing an examination in order to get the added/upgraded registration.” The full eligibility gate on that service — the ten-year revocation window, the two-year warning-letter bar — is set out in the specialty title guide, and it applies here identically.
Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the federal licence
Keep the two documents apart, because they have different reach.
The PQR is the Unified PQR, presented jointly by MOHAP, the Department of Health Abu Dhabi, the DHA and the Sharjah Health Authority. Sections 18.1 and 18.20 are therefore the qualification requirements across all four, and DOH publishes its own copy. The route that makes a licensed nurse exempt from the experience requirement is not a Dubai concession — it is the federal-level rule.
Clause 10.14 is different. It is in the DHA’s own manual, so the three-category restriction and the cancel-your-other-licence rule are Dubai’s. Do not assume Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or MOHAP restrict the title the same way, and do not assume they do not. Ask the authority that will license you, not the one you read about. Which authority that is, and why it matters more than most nurses expect, is covered in choosing your authority.

Frequently asked questions
Can a nurse do laser hair removal in Dubai?
Not on a nursing licence alone. Clause 13.12 of the DHA's Manual for Licensing Healthcare Professionals (version 1.3, effective 18 July 2025) states that all healthcare professionals performing hair laser procedures require a separate DHA licence for hair laser procedures. The title that licence is issued against is Laser Hair Reduction Technician, set out in section 18.20 of the UAE's Unified PQR, 3rd version. A Registered Nurse or Assistant Nurse is named there as a base qualification, so the route is open to you, but it is a second title added to your registration rather than something your nursing licence already covers. Confirm the current versions of both documents before you act.
Does being a Registered Nurse make the DHA laser title easier to get?
Yes, and the advantage is specific. Section 18.20 of the Unified PQR, 3rd version, publishes three routes to the Laser Hair Reduction Technician title. The first is for someone already licensed by one of the UAE authorities as a Registered Nurse, Assistant Nurse or Beauty Therapist, plus an accredited laser training course for hair reduction with evidence of ten hands-on training cases — and that route carries 'No experience required', subject to the Discontinuity of Practice criteria. The other two routes start from the academic qualification rather than a live licence, and both ask for one year of post-qualification experience in a related field. Getting licensed first is therefore the shorter sequence.
Can I get the DHA aesthetician title with my nursing degree?
No. Section 18.1 of the Unified PQR, 3rd version, is a single row, and it asks for a diploma in Beauty Therapy or Cosmetics from a nationally accredited institute of at least one year's course duration, plus one year of experience post qualification in a related field. It publishes no nursing route and no exemption for licensed professionals. Clause 10.14 of the DHA manual separately names Registered Nurse and Assistant Nurse as categories eligible to apply for the title, but it does so 'after meeting the relevant licensing requirements' — which are the PQR's. Eligible to apply is not the same as qualified.
Do I have to give up my nursing licence to work in aesthetics in Dubai?
Not as a nurse. Clause 10.14 of the DHA's Manual for Licensing Healthcare Professionals version 1.3 restricts the Beauty Therapy/Aesthetician title to three licensed categories: Registered Nurse, Assistant Nurse and Laser Hair Reduction Therapist. Clause 10.14.1 then says that any other category of licensed healthcare professional wanting the title must first cancel their existing specialty licence, because holding and activating both simultaneously is not permitted. That cancellation rule is aimed at the professions outside the list, so a nurse is among the few who can hold both. This clause is in the DHA's own manual, not the joint PQR, so it is Dubai's rule — ask DOH, MOHAP or the Sharjah Health Authority about their own position.
What does 'ten hands-on training cases' mean for the DHA laser title?
It is evidence the PQR asks for in all three routes to the Laser Hair Reduction Technician title, so a certificate of course attendance with no logged cases does not satisfy any of them. Section 18.20 of the Unified PQR, 3rd version, pairs the accredited laser hair reduction course with 'evidence of ten (10) hands-on training cases', and where the certification was obtained outside the UAE it names two bodies: the Society for Clinical and Medical Hair Removal (SCHMR) and the National Council on Laser Certification (NCLC). Ask any training provider how it documents the ten cases before you pay, and confirm the current PQR version.
